This one has it all. Layers and layers of history built on top of each other. You want an amazing castle with a brilliant keep you can climb and pretend you’re a lookout? Check. Incredibly well preserved Roman fortifications? Check. Medieval Bailey and more modern Napolionic wars history? Check.
Originally built as Roman fort in the 3rd Century, you can see all the classic Roman walls still almost perfectly intact, complete with the same tile layers you see at Pevensey Castle. The walls still stand strong, looking out into Portsmouth harbour, and staying atop the Great Tower (about 30m up) the views are breathtaking.
From its Roman origins, through Saxon and medieval periods, to its later use as a POW camp in the Napleonic wars, this castle has proven a versatile and imposing landmark.
I wanted to create a piece that felt strong, something immovable and timeless which had a sense of progression and complexity. This will likely be the last one for a little while, so it I needed it to like a fitting end point.
