I visited Oxfordshire’s Rollright Stones in late ’21, but here I am, writing the copy getting on for a year later. My memories are of getting to the site very early, but not quite early enough to avoid an immediate mad scramble to get the photography in as the sun was coming up.
It’s a Neolithic and Bronze Age site, with a dolmen (“The Whispering Knights”), a stone circle (The King’s Men) and a standing stone (“The King Stone”) across the road. The names suggested a story, the knights plotting against the King and his men, and standing in this magical landscape, it’s easy to suspend disbelief and let your imagination fill in the gaps. Count me in for a bit of Neo-paganism.
Here’s the track. I really embraced the story in my head…
