Ambient Heritage recording live at Chapel Wood, North Devon

Chapel Wood, North Devon- LIVE

I have a long history with North Devon. My whole life has seen summers, easters, Christmases here. I’ve been playing on the sandy beaches, in the sand dunes and in the countryside my whole life.

And Chapel Wood has always been there. Fungi hunting with my dad when I was little, birdwatching, then later, splashing in the stream with the kids. All the time soaking up the unique vibe of this magical wood. On top of a wooded hill, you’ll find an iron-age hillfort, and down the bottom, near a natural spring, there’s a ruined chapel (hence the name).

The Chapel itself dates to ~1250, and remains hallowed ground, created for a single priest. You can see the remains of a two-room dwelling/chapel, and the vibes are super-atmospheric, the quiet punctuated by the birds from the woodland.

This piece was recorded live at the wood in August ’25, with the help of the ever-enigmatic F01re, who also played on the Merrivale piece from 2024. Moody and spiritual in equal measure, I’m quietly pleased with this one, since the location means so much to me.

Here’s the piece:
