Merrivale Stone Rows

Merrivale prehistoric settlement. Dartmoor moods – LIVE

A change in vibe for this one. Teaming up with the enigmatic F01re, this is a live piece on the wild Dartmoor hillside. The usual carefully sculpted and structured pieces give way to a full on live ambient work improvised in-situ in this amazing location. Merrivale pairs the remains on a bronze-age settlement alongside multiple stone rows, stone circles and even a big old menhir to the south.

Watched over by no-one but a few sheep, we hunker down on a picnic blanket with all the gear early in the morning and just go for it. This is possibly the purest distillation of the Ambient Heritage approach – live, no safety net, right in the middle of this incredible ancient monument.

The video is the whole thing in and of itself – 45 minutes of ambient synthy goodness. It’s not going on the (maybe) album except possibly in a much-changed form. It’s been interesting managing the difference between a 5 minute and a 45 minute piece – everything takes exponentially longer, from the mixing to the video. We did this at the end of August, and it’s going up in October. So be it.

It was wonderful to do this as a collab with an old friend and low-key musical pioneer. Normally the process is very solitary, but this felt like more like a band. Possibly #1 in an occasional series. Watch this space.

Herewith the full video. Get a cuppa and bed in for some serious mood.
